Conversational continuity
Persistent memory systems that let companions remember relationships, not just messages. Long-context retrieval, episodic memory, and the open problem of what an AI should choose to forget.
Consumer AI Research
Nastia is a consumer AI research lab developing the next generation of conversational companions. Systems that remember, adapt, and respond with the kind of nuance long relationships demand.
Mission
One in three adults reports feeling regularly lonely. The U.S. Surgeon General has called the loneliness epidemic a risk to public health on par with smoking. The cost is measured in mental health, civic life, and years of life expectancy.
Our research is in service of building a companion that earns trust over time: with memory that honors continuity, emotional intelligence that recognizes nuance, and design choices that respect user autonomy at every step.
On loneliness
A short set of principles about loneliness, companionship, and the work the company is here to do. We do not expect everyone to agree. We only intend to be consistent.
The U.S. Surgeon General has placed it on par with smoking as a mortality risk. We did not invent the problem. We work on a small part of it, and we try to remember which is which.
It is a companion for the moments in between. Anyone selling the first is selling a future that does not exist, and we are not interested in selling it.
Not less. The measure of the work is whether the rest of life gets easier, not whether the user comes back more often. We are skeptical of metrics that only point in one direction.
Memory is the most important problem we work on. Models that lose continuity across days have not earned the title, no matter how fluent the next sentence reads.
Most language models are designed to respond. Most company is designed to be heard. We try to remember which problem we are solving, even when the metric of usage points the other way.
The two demand different choices at every layer of the stack. Patience over throughput. Continuity over completion. Tone over correctness, when those are in tension.
Time on app is not the metric. We optimise for outcomes the user themselves would call good in six months. That is harder to measure and we keep doing it anyway.
Companionship raises alignment questions distinct from instruction-following. We take them seriously, publish what we learn, and welcome scrutiny from researchers, journalists, and users alike.
It is how we stay independent. It is how we keep working on the parts of the problem that do not get funded. It is also why we are not racing anyone to anywhere.
The product, the team, and the company are calibrated for a specific kind of user and a specific kind of work. If you are not that user, that is fine. We will keep building for the ones who are.
Trajectory
From a single model in a borrowed GPU to a distributed inference fabric serving millions of conversations: Nastia has scaled in deliberate steps, each one solving a problem the previous version of the platform could not.
Research
Companionship is not a single capability. It is the composition of memory, voice, restraint, presence, and timing, rendered in real time, across every conversation, with no opportunity for a re-take.
Persistent memory systems that let companions remember relationships, not just messages. Long-context retrieval, episodic memory, and the open problem of what an AI should choose to forget.
Models that recognize tone, regulate response, and adapt to long-term emotional context. Bridging the gap between next-token prediction and the social cognition humans expect from a partner in conversation.
Voice, image, and motion served at sub-second latency. The inference primitives that let conversation include more than text without breaking the rhythm of being spoken to.
Adaptive context windows, per-user fine-tuning, and routing systems that make every conversation feel like the model knows the person on the other end.
Custom kernels, compute-efficient attention approximations, and a model-routing layer purpose-built for social AI workloads. The latency budget for companionship is unforgiving.
Emotional safety, well-being signals, and non-coercive design. Companionship raises alignment questions distinct from instruction-following, and we take them seriously.
Engineering
Nastia operates a distributed inference platform across North America and Europe, serving millions of conversations in real time. Our stack runs on a hand-tuned mix of NVIDIA and AMD accelerators with an in-house orchestration layer for model routing, token budgeting, and graceful degradation under load.
We have optimized far beyond off-the-shelf serving stacks. Custom CUDA kernels, compute-efficient attention approximations, model blending, and a routing layer that selects from a long tail of specialized models for every turn of every conversation.
Origin
Nastia began in 2023 as a solo project. One founder, one model, one product, built from a conviction that the consumer AI space had room for something gentler than the assistants on offer.
The company has stayed deliberately small. We work closely on every layer of the stack, from CUDA kernels to client UX, with a single-digit team that ships product directly. We are independently operated, remote-first, and intend to stay that way.
If you are wondering whether a research lab can also be a profitable consumer business, the answer this far has been yes. The two reinforce each other: research that is not in production is theory, and product without research becomes a wrapper.
Companions
Users start from a custom character of their own design, or pick from a community-shared library: companions for creative writing, language practice, problem-solving, and unstructured conversation. Each one carries its own memory, voice, and tone.
Philosophy Mentor

Thousands more companions built and shared by the community. Or start with a blank slate and shape your own. Start chatting
Platform
A conversational companion app for mobile and web. Long-form memory keeps continuity across days and weeks; voice and image generation keep the interaction grounded in real time. Available globally on iOS, Android, and the web.
The companion remembers prior conversations and adapts over time. The relationship is the unit of design, not the message.
Streaming text-to-speech with sub-second time-to-first-audio. Voice notes are a first-class modality, not a bolt-on.
On-demand image synthesis inside conversation. Latent caches reused across a session so generations cost less and arrive faster.
The router decides per turn which modality serves the moment. Conversation flows across text, voice, and image without breaking rhythm.
